Prof Faadiel Essop of the Department of Physiological Sciences, Stellenbosch University has been invited by the International Union for Physiological Sciences (IUPS) to serve on it’s Board of the General Assembly (BGA).

Essop has his roots firmly in Paarl soil, being the son of a well-known Paarl businessman Yusuf Essop and former teacher Fareda.
The Essops lived in the Ou Tuin area of central Paarl before being forced out by the apartheid Group Areas Act.
Essop remembers his early years in Paarl, and especially the warm friendships formed while living in Charleston Hill.
“This eventually resulted in us forming a cricket club called the Cavaliers with many games played that kept us busy and occupied,” he said. “It was also fun growing up in Paarl, with most of your lose family literally minutes away, although several have now moved out of Paarl. Weekends and holidays were spent assisting in the family business and this was a good learning experience in terms of cultivating a work ethic and developing managerial and leadership skills.”
